That's not to say that a bad start puts hope beyond reach, but strong performance early on is hugely beneficial in securing victory. It is, as would be expected of a real-time strategy title, a matter of momentum - earn 'cubes' (currency) by destroying enemies and then invest in more units, building your forces. The Cubemen come in a range of classes that cover the standard bases affordable pea-shooters, rocket launchers, laser weapons and even units that function as walls and mines. Once you do become accustomed to the control setup there's a well-structured, enjoyable strategy game. It's functional and becomes manageable with practice, but it is a square-pegs-round-hole solution it's the only control scheme, so you need to get used to it. However, the modest resolution and size of the GamePad screen isn't a perfect fit, and this feels like a rather nice PC interface crammed down onto a limited touch screen - with some physical inputs mashed in. An experience available on PC and tablet devices, what we have here is a mix of control schemes only possible - in console terms - with Wii U. To address this right away, it highlights both a strength and weakness of the entire reasoning behind this release. The TV is simply for display purposes and to entertain potential onlookers, but the player's eyes are glued to the controller's relatively small - in the context of this experience - screen. It is, in early moments, a slightly baffling setup selecting a unit and its destination is done with taps, yet the quickest way to shift the view is with the analogue options, meaning a one-handed stylus effort while holding the controller. Battlefields can be navigated with a mix of touch and button inputs, with camera movement that can also be controlled with the analogue sticks. Developer 3 Sprockets and publisher Nnooo have done an admirable job on a technical level, but importantly have also served up an entertaining real-time strategy title that's relatively unique on Nintendo's store.Īn important details for those interested in Cubemen 2 is that it is entirely dependent on the GamePad and its touch screen. These include the ability to do damage to enemy cubemen, heal the player's cubemen, or freeze the opponent for a short time. While Pure Chess became the first cross-platform multiplayer title on Nintendo eShop stores, Cubemen 2 arrives with a far more complex and potentially rewarding setup. In certain games cubes spawn that can be picked up to gain power-ups. * Sudden death: endless waves but only one life for the player. * Endless: classic games with endless waves. * Just rockets: limited waves but the player only has Ricky with rockets, while the opponent uses crossbow men. * Limited cubes: limited waves, but only 350 cubes to start and no way to earn more. * Limited players: limited waves to defeat, but no more than eight cubemen can be on the field. Defense is the main singleplayer mode and it is split up in six game types:* Classic: survive all waves to win the game. Online multiplayer is fully cross-platform across PC (both Windows and Macintosh) and tablet. Skirmish is a one-on-one mode against another player or the computer, while Mayhem is a full network game for free-for-all or with teams. The three main game modes are Defense, Skirmish and Mayhem. While playing it is possible to zoom in and the camera can be rotated freely. One is lost every time a cubeman from the opponent reaches the player's base. In most game types the player has a limited amount of lives. Waves have different strengths and the difficulty is shown through a colour meter in the top left corner. Defeated opponents yield cubes used as a currency to buy new units. As maps can be large, units can still be moved around after the initial placement. Players can also toggle between close and far firing, but apart from that the units target on their own. Each unit has a different type of gun, range, and health. Units include Grill wielding a fast pistol but with low health, Flint who can set enemies on fire, Moty who launches mortars, Ricky with homing rockets, Lazlo with a laser gun, and more. The goal is usually to survive different waves of enemies by strategically placing different types of cubemen around the map. Each map starts with the player's base and one or more opponent's bases on a grid with cubes of different heights. Cubemen is a 3D tower defense game based around units made out of cubes.
